Clostridium perfringens is a ubiquitous, spore-forming anaerobic bacterium responsible for diverse pathologies ranging from food poisoning to life-threatening gas gangrene. Its primary virulence factor is the alpha-toxin (CPA), encoded by the cpa gene (also known as plc), which is uniquely located in a stable, highly conserved region of the bacterial chromosome rather than on mobile plasmids. As a zinc-dependent metalloenzyme with phospholipase C and sphingomyelinase activity, CPA facilitates tissue necrosis and immune evasion by degrading host cell membrane phospholipids. Because the cpa region is present in nearly all isolates, it serves as the definitive genetic marker for the species and is the foundational component in the toxinotyping system used to classify strains A through G.
