The mip gene encodes for the macrophage infectivity potentiator (Mip) protein, a key virulence factor in Legionella pneumophila, the species most commonly associated with Legionnaires’ disease. Mip belongs to the immunophilin superfamily and exhibits peptidyl-prolyl cis/trans isomerase (PPIase) activity. This protein contributes to the intracellular survival and replication of Legionella within host macrophages, playing a crucial role in the disease progression. The PPIase activity of Mip can be inhibited by immunosuppressants like FK506 and rapamycin
