DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) is a synthetic organochlorine insecticide that has been used historically for vector control and agricultural pest management. Due to environmental persistence and ecological concerns, most agricultural uses of DDT were banned in the United States by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 1972. Current use within the U.S. is limited to specific public health applications involving disease vector control. Although global use has declined, DDT may still be employed in certain regions for targeted mosquito control programs. Because of its chemical stability and persistence, DDT can remain detectable in environmental samples long after application.
