It is commonly transmitted through undercooked beef, contaminated produce, and unpasteurized dairy. The stx1 gene encodes Shiga toxin 1, a potent cytotoxin that inhibits protein synthesis in host cells, leading to cell death and tissue damage. Detection of the stx1 region is critical for identifying pathogenic E. coli O157 strains and assessing their virulence potential in clinical and environmental samples.
