2-Methylisoborneol (2-MIB) is a musty-smelling terpenoid produced primarily by several genera of cyanobacteria, including Pseudanabaena, Phormidium, and Planktothrix. Its biosynthesis is directed by the mic gene (also called mlbC), which encodes the enzyme monoterpene cyclase. This enzyme cyclizes 2-methylgeranyl diphosphate into 2-MIB. The conserved mic gene region allows for the design of specific qPCR primers, enabling the early detection and quantification of 2-MIB-producing cyanobacteria in water sources, thereby supporting proactive management of taste-and-odor events.
