The Envelope (E) protein is the smallest and least understood of the SARS-CoV-2 structural proteins. Despite its small size, it plays a critical role in various aspects of the viral life cycle and is directly involved in the disease process (pathogenesis). The E protein is abundantly expressed in infected cells but only a small portion is integrated into new virus particles.

The SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid (N) protein is a highly abundant structural protein that plays a critical role in the virus’s life cycle. Its primary function is to package the viral genome RNA into a helical ribonucleoprotein (RNP) complex, essential for viral assembly. The N protein is also involved in viral replication, transcription, and modulating the host immune response.
