Zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) and quagga mussels (D. rostriformis bugensis) are ecologically and economically destructive invasive bivalves. Their microscopic larval stage (veligers) makes early detection challenging. The 18S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene, a highly conserved region in the nuclear genome, has been used as a molecular target for their detection. While useful for broad taxonomic identification, its high conservation limits the ability to reliably distinguish between these two closely related Dreissena species.
