Detecting Formaldehyde in E-Cigarettes Pod liquid
Attogene’s has evaluated for the presence of formaldehyde in E Cig Pod liquid using its formaldehyde detection kit catalog number EZ2012.
Formaldehyde is an organic compound with the formula CH2O. It is mainly used in the production of industrial resins but has been found to be used as a preservative, disinfectant and biocide. Because of its toxicity and volatility formaldehyde poses a significant risk to human health. Attogene test uses the property of formaldehyde to react with the Formaldehyde Reaction Powder (FRP) to form a purple-red tetrazine. The formaldehyde concentration is measured by visual comparison of the reaction with the color scale derived from the Color Card.
In order to evaluate formaldehyde in the liquid contained in the Pods of E-Cigs we opened the pod and added it to the Attogene Formaldehyde detection kit. This is a rapid and easy test which when applied for this purpose found a color change to purple indicative of some level of formaldehyde containing material in the oil. Although these test were preliminary and require additional verification and validation they may suggest that pod liquid from e-cigs may contain formaldehyde.
