Algae genetic manipulation
Thought leaders in the industry such as Mark Hildebrand from the Marine Research
Division, Scripps Institution of oceanography has made several important
statements. First, he said that genetic approaches can aid in the understanding the regulation of algae lipid metabolism and carbon partitioning under different growth conditions. Second, he said that genetic approaches can be used to metabolically engineer or select for abundant lipid production coupled with high biomass accumulation and third, he said that genetic approaches can be used to facilitate large scale processing of microalgae. Such statements, as these and others in the field
indicate the algae industry is in need of commercial entities with the
experience to develop commercialized and advance technologies for its
benefit.
